The McGoverns Family Portrait, 2024. Oil On Canvas

When I decided to add a family portrait to my portfolio, I wanted it to feature a family I truly admired. The McGoverns immediately came to mind. Chloe, the mother, is an ER doctor, and David, the father, is a science professor. On top of these demanding roles, they’re raising two wonderful children, Elowyn and Rowan. Their warmth, resilience, and joy as a family inspired me to create a portrait that reflected their unique dynamic.

The client envisioned a legacy portrait that reflected her grandmother’s character and her connection to the family’s Devon farmhouse, a beloved gathering place.

As I reflected on their special day, I wanted to gift them something meaningful to commemorate it. The challenge was working from photographs I hadn’t taken myself. While modern wedding photography often avoids direct eye contact, I believe that the most impactful portraits are those where sitters engage directly with the viewer. For this piece, I selected the one photograph that I felt could translate into a strong painting, and I’m pleased with how it turned out.
