Commissioning an oil portrait is a rewarding process that results in a unique, personal piece of art. Whether it’s to celebrate a milestone, honour a loved one, or add a touch of elegance to your home, here’s a detailed step-by-step guide to help you navigate the journey.
1. Initial Enquiry
The first step is to make an enquiry. Reach out via email or through the contact form on my website. Provide details about what you’re looking for, including the subject of the portrait, preferred size, and any specific ideas or requirements you have in mind.
2. Consultation
After your enquiry, we will schedule a consultation – in person, over the phone, or via video call. During the consultation, we’ll discuss your vision for the portrait, including the subject’s pose, background, clothing, and overall style. This is also an opportunity to address any questions or concerns you may have.
3. Agreement and Deposit
Once we have a clear understanding of your requirements, we will finalise the details, including the timeline and cost – we take a 50% to pay for the materials. This agreement ensures that both parties are clear on the expectations and terms of the commission.
4. Reference Materials
For the portrait, high-quality reference materials are essential. If you have specific photographs you’d like to use, please provide them. Alternatively, I can take my own reference photos. If you prefer a live sitting, we will schedule a session to capture the necessary details.
5. Creation Process
The creation process begins with sketches and preliminary studies to establish the composition and overall design. Once these are approved, I will start the actual painting. Throughout this phase, I will provide updates and progress photos, allowing you to see the portrait develop and provide feedback if needed.
6. Finalisation
Upon completing the portrait, I will share a final photo for your approval. Any minor adjustments or tweaks can be made at this stage. Once you are fully satisfied with the portrait, the painting will undergo a drying period This can take anywhere up to 12 months.
7. Varnishing and Framing
After the painting has dried, it will be varnished to protect the surface and enhance the colours. While I currently do not offer framing services, I can recommend reputable framers who can provide a suitable frame for your portrait.
8. Delivery or Collection
Finally, the portrait will be ready for delivery or collection. For local clients, collection from the studio is often preferred as it provides an opportunity to see the portrait in person. For clients further afield, I can arrange secure delivery.
Conclusion
Commissioning an oil portrait is a collaborative and enjoyable process that results in a beautiful, bespoke piece of art. By following these steps, you can ensure a smooth and successful experience, resulting in a portrait that will be cherished for years to come.
