Choosing the Right Painting Support for Your Portrait

Selecting the appropriate painting support is crucial for the aesthetic quality, durability, and longevity of your portrait. Here, we’ll explore the history, considerations, and benefits behind choosing the right painting support for your artwork.

The Evolution of Oil Painting Supports

Oil painting has a rich history of experimentation with various supports. From ancient times, artists have used plaster, wood panels and canvas to paint on. Understanding the historical context of oil helps us appreciate the evolution and importance of these materials.

Understanding the Acidity of Oil Paint

A critical factor in selecting a painting support is the acidity of oil paint. Over time, acidic paints can deteriorate certain supports, leading to discolouration and damage. Choosing a support with low acidity is essential to preserving the artwork’s integrity and ensuring its longevity.

Benefits of Panel and Gesso Panel

Panel painting offers a stable and rigid support that resists deterioration. Gesso panels, in particular, provide a smooth and absorbent surface for oil paint, allowing for precise brushwork and vibrant colour rendering. The solidity of panels ensures the longevity of the artwork, making them an excellent choice for portraiture. BUT they can be very heavy and difficult to transport.

Cotton vs. Linen

Canvas, made from cotton or linen, is a popular painting support for oil portraits. Cotton canvas is affordable and accessible, while linen canvas boasts superior strength, durability, and archival quality. Linen provides a stable foundation, minimising the risk of deterioration over time. Cotton and Linen are much easier to handle from a logistical perspective.

Preference for Quality Linen on Stretcher Bars

In my practice, I prioritise using high-quality linen canvas stretched over sturdy stretcher bars. Linen canvas offers exceptional durability and a smooth paint application surface. Its tight weave ensures the portrait’s stability and archival quality, preserving its integrity for generations.

Choosing the right painting support is a foundational step in creating a portrait that stands the test of time. By understanding the history, properties, and benefits of different supports, artists can ensure the preservation and quality of their work for decades.
