The Tightlits Family Portrait
When Abdel approached me to create a family portrait, it was an honor to work with him again. A year earlier, I had painted a portrait of his father, and his satisfaction with that piece led him to commission this one. Abdel envisioned a portrait of himself, his wife, and their two children set against a mountainous backdrop from his home country. This unique request presented new challenges, but it also offered an exciting opportunity to push my skills further.
The Challenge: Balancing Landscape and Family in a Composite Portrait
This project combined portraiture with a detailed landscape, making it a particularly complex commission. Abdel provided several photographic references for both the family and the setting, which needed to be blended into a single cohesive composition.
Creating the mountainous backdrop was especially challenging. Plein air painting isn’t my specialty, so capturing the perspective and detail required significant effort. Additionally, balancing the dynamism of the figures with the vastness of the landscape posed compositional challenges. While it deviates from traditional portrait conventions, the final painting reflects the client’s vision and personal connection to the setting.
The Process: Crafting The Tightlits Family Portrait
- Understanding the Vision: During our discussions, Abdel shared his deep connection to the mountainous backdrop and its importance to his family. His clear vision guided the design and helped me align my work with his expectations.

- Composite Approach: Using multiple photographic references, I combined images of the family and the landscape. Achieving a natural integration between the figures and the setting required careful attention to scale, perspective, and lighting.
- Artistic Choices: I emphasized the movement of the family as they ascended the hill, creating a sense of dynamism and connection to the landscape. The foreground’s detail, paired with the vastness of the sky, added depth and balance to the composition.

- Overcoming Challenges: Integrating the figures with the background while maintaining a cohesive perspective was the most demanding aspect of this project. However, I persevered, refining each element to ensure the portrait met Abdel’s specifications while reflecting my artistic approach.
The Outcome
The finished painting captures Abdel’s family moving up a hill with the majestic mountains of his home country as a backdrop. The figures, dynamic and natural, feel grounded in the scene, while the expansive sky provides a sense of scale and freedom.
Although the portrait challenges traditional conventions, it fulfills the client’s vision and serves as a meaningful representation of their connection to both family and place. As one of my first professional commissions, this painting is a milestone in my practice.
Reflections
This commission taught me a great deal about integrating portraiture and landscape, as well as the complexities of composite paintings. While it stretched my abilities, it also reinforced the importance of adaptability and client collaboration. I’m proud of how the piece turned out, and it gave me the confidence to approach future commissions with an open mind and willingness to grow.
