Introduction: The McGoverns Family Portrait
When I decided to add a family portrait to my portfolio, I wanted it to feature a family I truly admired. The McGoverns immediately came to mind. Chloe, the mother, is an ER doctor, and David, the father, is a science professor. On top of these demanding roles, they’re raising two wonderful children, Elowyn and Rowan. Their warmth, resilience, and joy as a family inspired me to create a portrait that reflected their unique dynamic.
The goal was to capture the natural energy of their home while highlighting the strong bond between them.
The Challenge: Balancing Family Life and Portraiture
Coordinating a session with such a busy family was no small task. With Chloe’s hospital shifts, David’s teaching schedule, and the lively routines of two young children, we decided that photographing them in their home was the best approach. This ensured the setting felt familiar and allowed them to relax while still capturing a sense of intimacy.
Another challenge was working with their chosen outfits. The family opted for bold red plaid, a personal choice that felt authentic to them, even if it presented some compositional hurdles. My job was to make this palette work harmoniously within the overall composition while reflecting the family’s personality.
The Process: Creating the McGoverns Family Portrait
- Capturing the Setting: The session took place in the McGoverns’ home, which allowed me to work within their natural environment. A bright yellow armchair quickly stood out as a focal point, pairing beautifully with their green curtains. We tidied the space and positioned the chair under the soft natural light pouring in from a nearby window.
- Photography and Composition: Time was limited, so I worked efficiently, taking several photographs from different angles. The final composition was a blend of three separate images to achieve the right balance of poses and interactions. I particularly loved how the children’s playful energy contrasted with the parents’ calm confidence.
- Artistic Choices: To bring cohesion to the portrait, I flattened the background with muted, desaturated tones. This subtle backdrop allowed the warm oranges of their skin to pop while complementing the bold red plaid outfits. The result was a vibrant yet balanced composition that highlighted their connection as a family.
- Details and Symbolism: David’s charismatic smile anchors the piece, while Chloe’s calm strength is emphasized as she balances the children climbing all over her. Elowyn’s cheeky expression brings charm and personality, while Rowan’s focus on an apple—a symbol of innocence and coming of age—adds a layer of narrative depth to the scene.
The Outcome
The completed portrait reflects the unique energy and love of the McGoverns. The yellow armchair, the green curtains, and the natural light create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The family’s vibrant personalities shine through, from David’s confident smile to Rowan’s quiet curiosity and Elowyn’s mischievous charm.
For the McGoverns, the portrait now hangs proudly in their home, serving as a testament to their life together—a mix of chaos, warmth, and joy.
Reflections
This project reminded me of the importance of authenticity in family portraits. While the outfits and setting might not have been my first choice, they were true to the McGoverns and their story, which is what mattered most. I learned to embrace the family’s unique style while using artistic choices to bring cohesion and balance to the final composition. It was a privilege to work with such an inspiring family and to capture their essence in a meaningful way.
