Introduction: Rose Hudson-Wilkin Portrait
Reverend Rose Hudson-Wilkin’s story is one of courage, determination, and groundbreaking achievements. She was the first woman in over 300 years to serve as Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons and the first black woman appointed as Chaplain to the Queen. Her life represents strength, grace, and the ability to break barriers within long-standing institutions. Inspired by her remarkable achievements, I began working on a Rose Hudson-Wilkin portrait to honour her legacy. The striking reference photograph, taken by Anita Corbin, provided the foundation for this meaningful project.
The Challenge: Creating the Rose Hudson-Wilkin Portrait
This project came with unique challenges. I didn’t know Reverend Rose personally, so I relied on research and the photograph as my reference. The setting, the Speaker’s State Rooms at the Palace of Westminster, featured rich reds, intricate patterns, and complex textures. These details added layers to the composition. Additionally, I paused progress after realising I hadn’t sought permission to use the image. This prompted careful reflection on ethical considerations to respect the original photographer and Reverend Rose.
The Process: Crafting the Rose Hudson-Wilkin Portrait
- Finding Inspiration: The photograph by Anita Corbin captured Reverend Rose’s warm and confident presence. Her bright smile and direct gaze engaged the viewer, creating a connection. Her chaplain regalia stood out against the dramatic reds and golds of the room, balancing authority with approachability.
- Composition and Setting: I focused on the interplay of the space’s rich colours and intricate patterns. The vertical and oblique lines from the paintings and cornices naturally framed Reverend Rose, emphasizing her presence. This composition created a visual dynamic that highlighted her leadership and legacy.
- Balancing Detail and Subject: While honouring the complexity of the setting, I centred her expression as the focal point. Her confident gaze and warm smile were key to the painting’s impact. The textures of her robes added depth, reflecting the significance of her achievements and role.

The Outcome
Though unfinished, the Rose Hudson-Wilkin portrait successfully captures her presence and legacy. Her confident expression draws the viewer into the scene, while the bold colours and detailed textures reflect her groundbreaking role. This painting serves as a step toward honouring her extraordinary life and achievements while addressing the ethical complexities of the process.

Reflections
This project provided an opportunity to explore Reverend Rose’s inspiring story while reflecting on ethical practices in portraiture. It reminded me of the responsibility that comes with portraying others. As I work toward completing the Rose Hudson-Wilkin portrait, I aim to balance inspiration with respect for the subject and the original photograph.
