Captain Rich Hill, October 2023. Oil On Canvas

Introduction: Captain Rich Hill Service Portrait

When Captain Rich Hill approached me to create a portrait, it was a privilege to commemorate his years of service in the army. Having served a term in Africa, Rich had returned to the UK to start a new chapter with his family. He wanted a painting that would honour his time in the military while reflecting the transition to his new life. Through our conversations and collaboration, we worked to create a portrait that captured the duality of his experience—his time in service and the new path ahead.

The Challenge: Balancing Service and New Beginnings

This commission required more than capturing Rich’s likeness in uniform. The portrait needed to evoke the emotional weight of his military service while symbolising the transition to civilian life and fatherhood. We decided to emphasise strong contrasts in light and shadow to convey this duality. While painting from life might have been an option, I wasn’t confident enough at the time and preferred to use photography to control the light and composition more precisely.

Another challenge was the intricate detail of Rich’s uniform, particularly the World War 1-inspired Number 1 dress uniform. Rendering the texture and detail of this iconic piece required meticulous attention and a commitment to honouring its historical significance.

The Process: Crafting Captain Rich Hill’s Service Portrait

Collaboration and Understanding: During our initial meeting, Rich shared his hopes for the portrait. We discussed his experiences in the army and his aspirations for the future, which helped shape the concept and tone of the painting.

Photography Session: We took a series of photographs, experimenting with lighting to find the right balance. We opted for dramatic shadows to symbolise the two sides of his journey: his military service in the past and his new life as a civilian and family man.

Artistic Choices: The uniform became a centrepiece of the painting. Its rich textures and historical significance added depth and gravitas to the piece. I took special care to capture the intricate details of the World War 1-inspired design, ensuring it reflected the pride and discipline associated with his service.

Symbolism Through Light and Shadow: The heavy shadow across Rich’s face served as a metaphor for his transition. The shadow represented his time in the army, a period of service, sacrifice, and challenge. The light symbolized his emergence from that chapter into a new life filled with hope and possibility.

The Outcome:

The finished portrait captures Captain Rich Hill in a moment of reflection and strength. His uniform, rendered with intricate detail, conveys the dignity and pride of his service. The interplay of light and shadow adds emotional depth, symbolising the transition from his time in the army to his new life as a civilian.

Rich was deeply moved by the result, which now holds a place of honour in his home as a reminder of his service and a celebration of the life he has built since.

Reflections:

This project reminded me of the power of portraiture to tell stories that blend personal history with future aspirations. It was a privilege to create a piece that honoured Rich’s military service while marking a significant transition in his life. The experience reinforced the value of collaboration and the importance of light and shadow in conveying emotion and narrative. It also reminded me of the craftsmanship involved in rendering details like uniforms, which serve as both personal and historical symbols.
