Introduction: Imogen Johnson-Gilbert Portrait
Every now and then, someone’s craft and dedication leave a lasting impression. For me, that person was Imogen Johnson-Gilbert, an exceptional tailor. Years ago, she created a bespoke suit for me—a piece I still wear with pride. Her precision, artistry, and collaborative approach left a deep mark. When I learned she had opened her own shop in Pimlico during the challenges of the pandemic, I felt compelled to honour her ingenuity and perseverance. For me, the Imogen Johnson-Gilbert Portrait celebrates Imogen’s skill, entrepreneurship, and enduring passion for her craft.
The Challenge: Capturing Imogen Johnson-Gilbert’s Craft and Resilience
This painting required more than simply capturing Imogen’s likeness. It needed to reflect her mastery as a tailor, her resilience as a business owner, and her presence within the shop she had built. The tailored suit she wore, crafted by her own hand, added an essential layer of complexity. Capturing the intricate textures and patterns of the fabric while balancing the interplay of light in her shop presented both technical and creative challenges.
Additionally, I painted this portrait on a handmade gesso panel, a surface I hadn’t worked with before. While the panel’s smooth, luminous quality complemented the details of the suit, it introduced challenges in framing and handling the final work.
The Process: Painting the Imogen Johnson-Gilbert Portrait
- Collaboration and Photography: I met Imogen at her shop, and we spent time discussing the shared challenges of self-employment and the journey of building something meaningful. Her shop, bathed in soft north-westerly evening light, provided an ideal setting. The natural light brought out subtle tones, from cool greens in the white walls to warm pink hues in the curtains, blending beautifully with the task lighting at her workbench. After exploring various poses, we selected one that captured her slightly from below, lending her a sense of strength and authority.

- Preparation and Surface: For this painting, I chose a handmade gesso panel—a departure from my usual canvas. This surface provided a smooth base that enhanced the fine details of the suit but required careful handling throughout the process.
- Painting the Portrait: My goal was to reflect not just Imogen’s likeness but also the essence of her craft. Her pose, framed by the shop’s understated elegance, emphasized her presence while showcasing the interplay of light. Particular attention was given to the textures and patterns of her suit, honoring the meticulous detail that defines her tailoring. Layers of glazing and impasto brought depth and texture, highlighting both her precision and the tactile nature of her work.

The Outcome
The completed portrait shows Imogen standing confidently in her shop, illuminated by the soft evening light. Her tailored suit, with its intricate texture and pattern, reflects her dedication to her craft, while her poised stance conveys the resilience and ingenuity she demonstrated in establishing her business during challenging times.
The painting was framed and installed in the shop, becoming a centrepiece that celebrates Imogen’s achievements. To mark the occasion, we hosted an open day and mini-exhibition of my work. Visitors appreciated not only this portrait but also the stories behind other pieces in my portfolio. The event was a resounding success, and it was a privilege to see Imogen’s story shared with her community.

Reflections
This portrait underscored the parallels between our crafts—tailoring and painting. Both require collaboration, patience, and a dedication to detail. It was an honour to capture Imogen’s story through my medium and to work with a new surface that challenged me technically. I walked away with a deeper appreciation for the nuances of her work and a renewed respect for the resilience of independent professionals.
